Eos Count Software S

The only way to get an accurate shutter count, or actuations- on Canon EOS DSLR bodies is to have the Canon Factory Service Center provide it. They need to have the camera on hand in order to run the test to get an accurate measurement on your camera's shutter.

I use this http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/
I've checked images from both my 40D and also my 1D MkII. I can't guarantee it's accuracy but it does appear to be OK.
I've cross referenced it with this http://www.camerashuttercount.com/ and a couple of other actuation counters I've come across and the count has matched and so I take it on face value.
Based on the amount I shoot, I reckon it's right.

I've made an OS X app called EOS Inspector that reads shutter actuations count:
http://eosinspectorapp.com
You can download it on the Mac App Store via this link:

No, gphoto and its underlying lib are completely unrelated to my app. Moreover, I believe it is not even possible to use this method if you want to distribute your app on the Mac App Store.
I hope you will find my little app useful!

I am very happy with ShutterCount.app and it only cost me $2 when I got it.
There are free options, yes, but they require an internet connections on a website.
THe app works on my laptop without internet to check my friends gear or used gear.
Worth it to me. (Old thread, but still valid info)

EOS Inspector is free and it doesn’t require an internet connection because it is a self-contained OS X application. Give it a try and let me know what you think about it.

None of these applications work on my cameras under OS X 10.8 or 10.6 (my backup computer). I even downloaded and compiled gphoto2, but it returns 'unknown camera' for both my 550D and 7D.
On the bright side, POTN user mij posted this gem:
Mac Shutter Count App
and it works perfectly on both of my computers, both of my cameras.

EOSCount.com is a website that allows users to get an accurate shutter count for most current EOS Digital SLR's. It was originally free, but now there is a small payment required to access to shutter count.
Much later in this thread another free 'copycat' website is talked about, but I would suggest avoiding it as there have been reports of 'Malware' on that website.
Sorry, not ALL EOS but most current ones..

Which cameras are supported for shutter count retrieval?
Single-DIGIC III, all DIGIC IV, and some DIGIC V EOS cameras are supported. For example, shutter count can be read from the
•Rebel XS / 1000D / Kiss F

DIGIC II and dual DIGIC III cameras are not supported. For example, shutter count is not available for the original 5D (Mark I), the 1D Mark III, and the 1Ds Mark III.

Try http://eoscount.com
You'll have to use a 32-bit version of Internet Explorer and install an ActiveX control for communication with the camera. Then the control will read the shutter count from a 60D or a 7D right in the browser.

EDITED to show which cameras and which browsers are supported...

Which browsers are supported?
32-bit Internet Explorer 5.0 and later. Firefox and Chrome are supported through the Internet Explorer tab (IE Tab). Other browsers are supported only when they can run ActiveX controls.
A browser must be 32-bit, as a 64-bit browser cannot run 32-bit ActiveX controls. The EOS Count control is 32-bit, because the Canon SDK is distributed in 32-bit version only.
The recommended browser is Internet Explorer 9.0.

I just tried this and it really works!
Serge, thank you for this great breakthrough.

According to the FAQ's on the download site, this will unfortunately NOT work on 5D classic.

Gave me the shutter count with 5D2 but couldn't read S/N.
After restarting browser, read both the shutter and serial correctly on 40D.
All in all, nice find, thanks for sharing!

It read my 7D fine, but then I popped off a couple of shutter clicks and it took multiple restarts of IE to get it to read the camera again, which it finally did, and correctly added the additional shutter actuations.
