About citations and references

A citation is a reference to a source. A citation consists of an abbreviated alphanumeric expression (e.g.: 'Smith (1997)' or 'Smith, 1997') embedded in the text of an intellectual work, which corresponds to an entry in the bibliographic references section of the work for the purpose of acknowledging the relevance of the works of others to the topic of discussion at the spot where the citation appears (for example, in order to supply evidence for an assertion). Generally the combination of both the in-body citation and the bibliographic entry constitutes what is commonly thought of as a citation (whereas bibliographic entries by themselves are not).

How to use the citation

In your text, when you need to give a reference for a claim or assertion, you would use a citation, linked to your full bibliography at the end of your work. There are two main systems for doing this:

  • The Oxford Referencing System
  • The Harvard Referencing System

The Oxford Referencing System

The Oxford Referencing System relies on footnotes. The first time you reference a publication, you would give a footnote reference, for example:

..as shown in recent experiments3.

Footnote 3, in this example, would contain the complete bibliographic reference (see above) to the relevant publication. When you subsequently reference the same source, you should include a further footnote, but this time you need only include the author, date of publication, and page number if appropriate, for example:

..as seen in the experiment4

and in the corresponding footnote:

4. Smith 2003 pp.35–36.

The Harvard Referencing System

The Harvard Referencing System does not use footnotes for references. Instead, the reference is always given in the main text as the author's name and date of publication, and where a direct quotation is used the page number should also be given.
For example:

..as shown in recent experiments (Smith 2003 pp.35–36)

Both Systems

In both the Oxford and Harvard systems, you must include a full bibliography at the end of the chapter, article, or book, containing all of the references in full bibliographic form, as shown on this page, in several widely-used styles.

Which style should you use?

Ask your publisher or institution / teacher / tutor which style you are preferred or required to use. If there is no preference or requirement, you can use any style, but the guidelines below give the conventional use:

  • APA (American Psychological Association): psychology, education, and other social sciences.
  • MLA (Modern Language Association): literature, arts, and humanities.
  • AMA (American Medical Association): medicine, health, and biological sciences.
  • Kate L. Turabian'sManual for Writers: designed for college students to use with all subjects.
  • The Chicago Manual of Style: used in all subjects for non-scholarly publications, by books, magazines, newspapers etc.

Citations for online and electronic resources

You may be required to use an additional indication for online resources. Depending on your institution or publication, this may not apply to ebooks, but you can add an extra line to the citation as follows:

Available from https://www.123library.org/ebook/isbn/XXXXXXXXXXXXX/

Simply substitute the ebook ISBN for 'XXXXXXXXXXXXX'. Please note that you should state 'available from' rather than 'retrieved from', because ebooks at 123Library must be purchased. 'Retrieved from' is only applicable to publicly accessible electronic resources.

Further information on citing electronic resources is available here.
